Van Gogh and Gauguin: Beyond the Visible

What happens when painting the visible world is no longer enough?

For Van Gogh, a sunflower could become an expression of life’s intensity; for Gauguin, a landscape could evoke a world of dreams and symbols. From the dark peasant interiors of the Netherlands to the sun-drenched landscapes of Provence, Van Gogh sought a deeper truth in nature. Gauguin, meanwhile, turned towards memory, myth and imagination, from Brittany to Tahiti. Their turbulent friendship culminated in barely two months together in Arles, where their contrasting artistic visions collided spectacularly. Rose explores the ambition, rivalry and radical experimentation of two artists who challenged the very purpose of painting.
