Picasso and Braque: Shattering the View
About This Talk
What if a painting could show us an object from several different viewpoints at once?
For several years, Picasso and Braque worked so closely together that their paintings became almost impossible to tell apart. Building on Picasso’s startling experiments in Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, they dismantled traditional perspective, fractured familiar objects and developed Cubism, an entirely new pictorial language. From fragmented violins and café tables to playful experiments with newspaper and wallpaper, Rose reveals how friendship, competition and a determination to challenge artistic convention transformed the possibilities of painting. After centuries of artists striving to create the illusion of three-dimensional space, Picasso and Braque turned the canvas into a place where reality could be taken apart and reassembled.
