Cézanne and Seurat: Beyond Impressionism
About This Talk
Could a few apples on a table change the course of modern art?
For Cézanne, the answer was yes. While the Impressionists pursued the fleeting effects of light, Cézanne sought something more enduring beneath appearances. Seurat, meanwhile, approached painting with almost scientific precision, constructing monumental scenes from countless tiny touches of colour. Working in radically different ways, these two artists challenged how painters understood colour, space and form, laying the foundations for some of the most daring experiments of the twentieth century. Rose explores how an ordinary still life and a Sunday afternoon on the Seine helped transform the possibilities of painting.
